In the United States, Independence Day is more commonly referred to as the Fourth of July or July 4th. It commemorates the signing and adoption by the Continental Congress of the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1776 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. The Declaration of Independence was drafted by Thomas Jefferson, who will become the United States third President (1801-1809). At the time of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the US consisted of 13 colonies under the rule of England’s King George III.
