A History of the World in 100 Objects

Working with the BBC, Neil MacGregor, the Director of the British Museum, has launched a downright smart project. A History of the World in 100 Objects uses important pieces from the museum’s collections to recount the long history of humanity.

100 episodes, each averaging 15 minutes, are serialized by BBC Radio 4 and they cover two million years of human innovation and artistic creation. Each programme focuses on one object from the Museum’s extensive collection.
Each week of programmes is tied to a particular theme, such as ‘after the ice age’ or ‘meeting the gods’. Objects have been selected to cover the broadest possible chronological and geographical period, and tell a history of the world from two million years ago to the present day.

Explore two million years of world history through objects. Choose to view them by location, theme, culture, size, colour, material, contributor or BBC area.
